With the revision of Book 1 completed and Book 2 now making steady progress, I’ve decided to provide little snippet teasers to keep you going until the releases are public. You can sign up for my newsletter at the bottom of this page.
We emerge from the forest to a large clearing that has a huge barn with several smaller paddocks sectioned off of it that then open up to a massive field that I can see no end to.
“Oh my,” I exclaim, “how beautiful!”
“You have brought us to the stables?” Tryaethus asks. “I have never been here, we are told it is forbidden; that it is a sacred place.” The awe in her voice is clear.
“That information is correct Tryaethus, we are here because The Keepers desire it to be so. You would never find it should you go looking for it and the path to it is never the same a second time.”
I’m confused, “What do you mean, it’s just a horse stable, I’ve been to several back, well, where we were living. My parents used to take me for riding lessons. What’s the big deal?” I take in the setting; it certainly is the most beautiful stable I’ve seen, though something is nagging at me.
“Oh Amanae, this is no ordinary stable!” Tryaethus says.
What is it about this place? I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Kalian is watching me. “Do you remember Amanae?”
Realization hits me, “Oh! My sister and I used to come here all the time!” Odd how that memory had stayed tucked away until now. I start walking towards the stable.
“What?” Tryaethus asks. “Are you sure? But Kalian, how is that…”
Kalian raises his hand to stop her.
“Oh Kalian, is Sheonna still here?” I ask suddenly, she was my favorite.
Kalian smiles, “She most certainly is and she has been growing impatient to see you again.”
“What? Oh don’t be silly Kalian, she won’t even know who I am. But I would sure like to see her again.”
“Do you remember how to whistle the way I taught you when you were a child?” he asks.
“Oh, I haven’t done that for years, but I’ll try.” I position my fingers in my mouth up against my tongue. It’s trickier than I remember, but after a few tries I manage to blast a very loud, high pitch whistle. To my delight a herd of horses come thundering towards us from the far field, with the most magnificent black leading by a long shot. Sheonna.
She comes to a sliding stop in front of me and it takes several minutes for the rest of the herd to catch up. She immediately leans into the fence to nuzzle me.
Kalian holds out his hand to me, “If I remember correctly, I believe she is looking for this,” he says, handing me a sugar cube.
I smile as I take it from him and climb through the fence to get closer to her.
“Amanae! What are you doing?” Tryaethus exclaims.
“It is ok my dear,” Kalian says, as he watches me reunite with Sheonna.
As I stand before Sheonna, she prances around a bit doing little hops with her front legs and backing up. After a moment she settles, then extending one leg forward she leans back to her hindquarters, bends her other front leg and bows.
“Do you still think that she does not remember you Amanae?” Kalian asks softly.
I’m thrilled and amazed at the same time. As she stands I give her the sugar cube and approach her shoulder.
Tryaethus is watching in complete awe. She whispers, “Kalian, does this mean…”
Again he silences her from completing her sentence with his hand and shakes his head no. ‘Tryaethus, this is information you must keep to yourself for now,’ Kalian says silently.
As I run my hands down Sheonna’s neck and through her silky mane, a flash of another one of my dreams is immediately in my mind, I gasp.
‘Do not be afraid child. Not all that you see will come to be.’
I step back, startled, looking at Sheonna. I glance at Kalian and Tryaethus, but they don’t seem to have heard what I have. I tentatively reach out to stroke her mane again and she leans into me putting her head over my shoulder, as if giving me a hug. She then turns back to the herd that had held back a bit from us and she took off back to the pasture with the rest following her.
I shake my head, good grief; did I really just think that a horse had just spoken to me?!
