Time travel, or realm travel?

Bloganuary day 21! Today’s prompt is:

If you could, what year would you time travel to and why?

On a personal level, I’m kind of a here and now type of person. Live in the moment. So, when I think seriously about it, I’m not so sure that there is any particular year within my life span, or outside of it, that I’d want to travel to. I don’t have any regrets that I’d want to reverse. And I cherish the memories of the moments I love best as they were. Both have shaped me into the person I am today.

If I get whimsical, then I can say that there was a time when I was deeply absorbed in the TV series Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, and I very much wanted to travel to that time. Which Google tells me was 1867. There’s a simplicity of life presented in that show that I really admired.

But when it comes to writing, I really don’t think in terms of “time”. I don’t set my stories in a particular decade or century. I don’t cover any historical aspects in my writing. I’d even say that, for the most part, I’m not a big fan of stories that lean into historical fiction, or futuristic times. For me, I’m more drawn to different realms. Parallel worlds. Pockets realms. Multi-universe concepts. Or just completely, non-existent, fantasy worlds that have nothing to do with the world as we know it.

Some of these worlds, or realms, might have parallel similarities to different eras of our world. I love medieval and victorian settings. But in “our” world, they’re not times that I’d want to travel to, and I wouldn’t write about those times. Rather, I’d borrow elements from these eras as I’ve seen them depicted in books, shows and research.

Plus, the entire concept and paradox of time travel makes my brain hurt!

Over to you! Is there a particular year that you’d like to travel to?
